Thank you!

Wow, what a project!

The 1967 American League pennant race was one for the ages. Four teams, right down to the wire.

My Tigers survived, winning 92 games and the pennant outright, while the real team won 91 and missed a tie with Boston by one game.

But my Tigers were one game better against Boston than the real team was in the regular season, and that enabled my guys to win the pennant.

The World Series was over in a heartbeat. My Tigers silenced the St. Louis Cardinals bats in sweeping the series. The Cards scored just six runs in the four games.

It was a hell of a ride.

It's always satisfying to finish a project; mainly because (at least for me) it's always easy to start a project and not so easy to finish one!

I have had several teams in the past "choke" in my projects. The 1978 Yankees, the 1990 Tigers, the 2003 Brewers and the 1972 Tigers all frittered away divisional leads in my replays with various tabletop games. But the 1967 Tigers finally got the monkey off my back!

I just wanted to thank everyone who followed this project, casually or not. I also appreciate the comments that were posted on the Delphi Forum.

The only thing left to do is to update the statistics. I am only through 116 games, so it will take me a little bit to catch up. When I do, I will post in the forum.

I think it's pretty cool that after 161 games, my Tigers and the real team both had 91-70 records. Only, in my replay, Dick McAuliffe didn't hit into a season-ending double play!

SERIES MVP: Willie Horton (two two-run homers, and both were game-winning hits---in Game 1 and Game 4)

The Cardinals never got rolling. Tigers pitching was dominant, and the Tigers hit six home runs in the Series to the Cardinals' one. Lou Brock was 4-for-16, yet his slugging percentage was .625 because his four hits were for the cycle. Yet Brock was never a factor.

The Cardinals won 101 games but their bats were totally silenced---just 21 hits in four games.

DET wins, 4-0.

TIGERS WIN!!!!!!

Champagne bottle corks popped in the Tigers clubhouse on Sunday as the team swept a twinbill from the California Angels to win the American League pennant.

In the clinching nightcap, the Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead by the fourth inning as Denny McLain was cruising on the mound.

But the Angels weren't going to go quietly into the Detroit night.

Buck Rodgers hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, and Don Mincher added a two-run shot (his third of the series) in the eighth to make the score 5-4 as the Tiger Stadium crowd squirmed with nervousness.

Had the Tigers lost the second game, a one-game playoff against Boston for the pennant would have been played on Monday at a site TBD via coin flip.

But closer Fred Gladding pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the pennant.

Game 1 of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals will be played on Wednesday in Detroit.

Bob Gibson will face Mickey Lolich.

Home stretch: Tigers in the thick of it!

Seven games remain. The Tigers are 88-67. If they win at least four of the remaining seven games, they will win the AL pennant outright.

A 3-4 record will give them 91 wins, and they will be tied with the Boston Red Sox, who will finish with 91 wins, not 92 as they did in real life because my Tigers were one game better against Boston than the real 1967 Tigers.

My Tigers were one game worse against Chicago, but the real White Sox finished with 89 wins, so in my replay they will only have 90 wins.

Against Minnesota, my Tigers were two games better against the Twins than the 1967 team. So in my version of the pennant race, the Twins will finish with 89 wins.

It's all there for my Tigers. Just win four of seven games.

The remaining schedule: one game at Washington, two at New York, and back-to-back doubleheaders at home vs. California.

Update: Tigers clinging to first place

The 1967 Tigers are clinging to first place in a crowded AL pennant race.

Detroit is 73-56 after winning two of three in Kansas City. The Minnesota Twins are in second place, just a half-game behind at 72-56. The Boston Red Sox are third (72-58, 1.5 GB) and the Chicago White Sox are fourth (70-58, 2.5 GB).

Tonight the Tigers open a four-game set in Anaheim against the California Angels. The teams will play single games Monday and Wednesday with a doubleheader sandwiched on Tuesday.

Stats are only updated through 106 games so it will be a while before they are updated on the blog.

Tuesday, August 1, 1967: Tigers 7, Baltimore 2

Baltimore, MD- Willie Horton slugged his 18th home run and Earl Wilson pitched his sixth complete game of the season as the Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles, 7-2 at Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers (56-43) levied a 14-hit attack on Orioles pitching in winning for the sixth time in seven games.

Horton's two-run homer capped a three-run third inning, and the Tigers added two more runs in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.

Wilson (11-6) scattered seven hits and the Orioles committed four errors.

Tom Phoebus took the loss for Baltimore, lasting just five innings.

Curt Blefary accounted for all of the Baltimore offense with two solo home runs.

Sunday, July 30, 1967: Tigers 6-3, Chicago 4-6 (DH)

Chicago, IL- A five-run third inning ensured that the Chicago White Sox avoided a four-game sweep as they took the second game of a Sunday doubleheader against the Tigers, 6-3 at Comiskey Park.

The Tigers won the first game, 6-4.

Two veterans were the big guns in the nightcap for Chicago.

Rocky Colavito's two-run homer followed Ken Boyer's two-run triple in the five-run third inning. The Tigers (55-43) chipped away with two runs in the fourth and a single run in the seventh, but the Pale Hose responded with a run in the eighth, thanks in part to two Tigers errors.

In the first game, six different Tigers---including pitcher Denny McLain---had one RBI each.

The Tigers banged out 12 hits as they staved off the White Sox, who scored a run in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate. But Tom McCraw grounded to relief pitcher Fred Gladding to end the game.

Gladding picked up his 22nd save, while McLain (9-8) pitched 8.2 innings for the win.

Ray Oyler had three hits in the first game, while Jim Northrup followed suit in the nightcap.

The doubleheader split kept the Tigers 1.5 games behind the first-place White Sox.

Saturday, July 29, 1967: Tigers 4, Chicago 2

Chicago, IL- Joe Sparma pitched a complete-game, three-hitter, leading the Tigers to a 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park.

Bill Freehan had a homer (15), a single and three RBI to pace the Tigers attack. Norm Cash added a solo home run (16) as the Tigers (54-42) won their fourth straight game and moved into second place, 1.5 games behind the Chisox.

The game started well for the White Sox as Ken Berry led off the first inning with a home run. But Sparma (10-10) gave up just two singles the rest of the game, both in the third inning. Sparma retired 20 of the final 22 hitters, including 18 in a row after giving up those two singles.

In the third inning, Al Kaline got his first hit since returning after a month-long absence due to a broken finger. Kaline doubled down the left field line.

Sparma walked three and struck out five.

Friday, July 28, 1967: Tigers 3, Chicago 0

Chicago, IL- Al Kaline returned after a month on the shelf with a broken finger, but the Tigers didn't need him as they beat the Chicago White Sox, 3-0, with Kaline going hitless.

Dick McAuliffe's solo homer (15) in the seventh inning broke a scoreless tie. Detroit added two insurance runs in the ninth on run-scoring singles from Willie Horton and Bill Freehan.

Earl Wilson (10-6) pitched eight innings for the win. Fred Gladding pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 21st save of the year.

The Tigers (53-42) have won three straight and are within 2.5 games of first-place Chicago.

Wilson, despite walking six, kept the Chisox scoreless, scattering six hits and striking out four.

The White Sox loaded the bases twice, and both times Wilson retired Wayne Causey to escape trouble. In the fourth inning, a 4-6-3 double play ended the inning. In the sixth, Wilson got Causey to ground out to escape.

White Sox starter Gary Peters only allowed two hits in seven innings, but one of them was McAuliffe's home run.

Thursday, July 27, 1967: Tigers 11, Baltimore 1

Baltimore, MD- The Tigers had 26 plate appearances with runners in scoring position, were hit by pitches four times and were the beneficiaries of four errors in routing the Baltimore Orioles, 11-1.

Eight of the 11 runs the Tigers scored were unearned.

Dick McAuliffe, Bill Freehan, Norm Cash and Gates Brown were all hit by pitches.

Freehan had three hits and four RBI as Detroit (52-42) won their second straight.

Denny McLain (8-8) got the win, going eight innings, scattering seven hits.

Despite going 4-for-20 with men in scoring position, the Tigers managed 11 runs, thanks in large part to four Orioles errors.

McAuliffe tied a franchise record with seven plate appearances in a nine-inning game. He was 0-for-4 with a hit by pitch and two walks.

Norm Cash (15) had a two-run homer to cap a four-run seventh inning.

Friday, July 21, 1967: New York 4, Tigers 3

Detroit, MI- Mickey Mantle had three RBI, including the game-winning single in the ninth inning, and the New York Yankees beat the Tigers, 4-3 at Tiger Stadium.

Mantle also drilled a two-run homer in the third inning.

Steve Whitaker added a solo home run in the eighth inning that tied the game, 3-3.

Both four-baggers came off Tigers starter Denny McLain. Mantle's single, which drove in pinch-hitter Dick Howser, came off loser John Hiller (3-3).

The Tigers (50-40) managed just five hits, while the Yankees used a late-game onslaught---seven hits in the final three innings---to overcome Detroit.

In the ninth with one out, Howser singled. Horace Clarke followed with a single that sent Howser to second base. Roy White lined out to shortstop, then Mantle drove a Hiller pitch into right field, which easily plated Howser.

The Tigers scored in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk by Jim Landis. In the fourth, Yankees center fielder Joe Pepitone misplayed Ray Oyler's line drive into a two-base error, which scored Jim Price. The Tigers' third run came in the seventh inning when Price singled home Bill Freehan, who had been hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. The run gave Detroit a 3-2 lead, but the Yankees' late surge carried them to victory.

Steve Hamilton picked up the win in relief, and Dooley Womack pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

Until right-hander Womack entered the game, the Tigers faced three pitchers who were all lefties, likely done to keep the Tigers' cache of left-handed bats on the bench as much as possible.

Thursday, July 20, 1967: Tigers 4, Washington 2

Detroit, MI- Beleaguered Joe Sparma pitched into the eighth inning, giving up just two unearned runs, and the Tigers beat the Washington Senators, 4-2, in the rubber game of a three-game series at Tiger Stadium.

Sparma (9-10), who came into the game with an ERA over 5.00, limited the Senators to five hits. He walked four and struck out three.

Mike Marshall and Fred Gladding sealed the win in relief, despite some late Washington threats. Gladding picked up his 19th save.

Norm Cash (13) hit a solo homer for the Tigers (50-39) in the second inning to put Detroit up, 3-0.

The Senators scored twice in the eighth, strongly aided by Jim Northrup's two-base error.

In the ninth, Washington put the first two runners on base against Gladding with a single and a walk. But a double play grounder to the pitcher and a tap to the catcher ended the threat and the game.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth when pinch-hitter Gates Brown doubled, scoring Cash, who had walked.

With the win, the Tigers crept to within one game of first-place and idle Chicago.

Wednesday, July 19, 1967: Washington 3, Tigers 0

Detroit, MI- Phil Ortega pitched a complete game, five-hit shutout, as the Washingto Senators beat the Tigers, 3-0, on Wednesday night.

Ken McMullen's two-run homer in the eighth gave Ortega some breathing room as the Senators tripled their lead from 1-0.

Paul Casanova hit a solo homer in the second inning. Both home runs came off starter Mickey Lolich (9-6), who went eight innings.

Ortega didn't walk a batter and struck out three in his gem.

The Tigers (49-39), who lost for just the third time in 11 games, went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Don Wert's one-out triple in the second inning provided the Tigers with their best scoring chance of the evening, but Ortega induced a pop up from Norm Cash and a ground ball from Dick Tracewski to get out of the jam.
